Regional Summer Melt Program

Print Friendly and PDF

Detroit Drives Degrees and the Detroit College Access Network are teaming up with school districts in the region to provide intensive advising to students over the summer months in an effort to combat summer melt, a situation in which a students applies for, gets accepted, and commits to a college but then ultimately does not show up in the fall. Every year, summer melt is a problem but this year, confusion and uncertainty caused by COVID-19 could make summer melt more prevalent than we’ve ever seen before. A recent poll of graduating seniors found that only 20% of respondents still plan to enroll in their first-choice school.

Detroit Drives Degrees is proving several resources for schools, students and families. Check back often for updates as we are continually adding more resources to this site.

Summer Support Interest Form

Students or parents can receive information about our summer supports which include personalized college coaching outreach, webinars, text reminders and tips for students, and more. Fill out the short sign-up form and a high-school counselor or adult education specialist will personally reach out to you to give an overview of the Metro-Detroit Summer Support Center and help you complete next steps to ensure that you are prepared for your first class this fall. While this service is geared toward high-school seniors, our counselors, coaches, and adult education specialists will be working all summer to connect all high-school students, college students, and adults with postsecondary opportunities—no matter where they are in the process.

Sign up here or text DETROIT to 484848 to receive the sign-up form straight to your phone!

Workshops for Students

Advising coaches and community partners will be conducting webinars and workshops for high-school juniors and seniors as well as adults throughout the summer. Past topics have included a college preparation checklist, FAFSA, selecting a best fit institution, and many others. Interested students, parents, and counselors can register using the link above. More workshops will be scheduled throughout the summer. Be sure to check back regularly for new topics.

Past presentations may be viewed and downloaded on our Webinar Recording Dropbox.

We welcome partners in college access to contribute to our series of presentations and suggest topics that help support a holistic college-going culture with our high school seniors. If you have any questions or suggestions, please reach out to jgarrett@detroitchamber.com or alane@detroitcan.org
