Regional Summer Melt Program

Print Friendly and PDF

Detroit Drives Degrees and the Detroit College Access Network are teaming up with school districts in the region to provide intensive advising to students over the summer months in an effort to combat summer melt, a situation in which a students applies for, gets accepted, and commits to a college but then ultimately does not show up in the fall. Every year, summer melt is a problem but this year, confusion and uncertainty caused by COVID-19 could make summer melt more prevalent than we’ve ever seen before. A recent poll of graduating seniors found that only 20% of respondents still plan to enroll in their first-choice school.

Detroit Drives Degrees is proving several resources for schools, students and families. Check back often for updates as we are continually adding more resources to this site.

Summer Support Interest Form

Students or parents can receive information about our summer supports which include personalized college coaching outreach, webinars, text reminders and tips for students, and more. Fill out the short sign-up form and a coach will reach out to you within 48 hours to give an overview of the Metro-Detroit Summer Support Center and help you complete next steps to ensure that you are prepared for your first class this fall.

Online Postsecondary Coaching

The innovative 1-on-1 virtual post-secondary coaching sessions are designed to supplement the work that counselors are doing on the frontlines to make sure that their students are prepared for their plans after high-school. Expert college coaches will be available from 1pm-3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to speak to students about various topics ranging from financial aid, scholarships, admissions/enrollment, college majors, career planning, and more. Students can reserve a 30-minute session to speak with a college advising corps alumnus who can answer questions and direct them to proper channels when their questions are student-specific.

Our coaches follow-up with every student after each session with action items that students can complete, and reach out in the following days to provide reminders and encourage students to schedule another appointment if they need additional support. Each coach is committed to providing individualized, long-term support to their students.
