U.S. Representative (D-MI 13)

Congressman Shri Thanedar proudly represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, which includes much of Detroit and Downriver. Thanedar grew up in abject poverty in India.  

After selling his company and sharing some of the profits with his employees, Congressman Thanedar ran for Michigan Governor in 2018. While unsuccessful, he was elected to the Michigan State House in 2020, where he focused on issues like racial justice, public health during the pandemic, and economic opportunities. He also helped increase school funding for Michigan students.  

Thanedar won his election for Congress in 2022 and is now in his second term. Congressman Thanedar is passionate about promoting entrepreneurship, education, affordable housing, reducing gun violence, immigration reform, and universal healthcare. Congressman Thanedar achieves his American Dream and is focused on helping his constituents in his district achieve theirs. Shri serves on the Homeland Security and Agriculture Committee and is a member of the executive board of CAPAC, the leading Congressional group on Asian American issues. 

After emigrating to the U.S. in 1979, Thanedar earned a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Akron.
