Tiffany J. Gunter is the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART), where she leads the agency’s overall strategy, operations, and service delivery across Southeast Michigan. Since joining SMART in 2022 as Deputy General Manager, Gunter has played a central role in advancing service improvements, organizational modernization, and community partnerships. Now as General Manager, she continues to focus on delivering safe, equitable, and reliable transit that meets the needs of riders and strengthens the region’s mobility network.
Gunter has long been passionate about public transit, previously holding leadership roles at the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments and the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan. She also has experience in higher education, automotive, and retail sectors, having worked at Wayne County Community College District, Chrysler, and Kmart Headquarters.
Gunter is a dedicated community leader, serving on the boards of MPACT, the Great Lakes Leadership Academy, and the Detroit Area Agency on Aging.
Gunter earned a Master of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan, as well as executive leadership certifications from Harvard University and the University of Notre Dame.
