Chamber Backs Historic AI Project, Cites Economic Growth and Ratepayer Protections

November 7, 2025

The Detroit Regional Chamber has submitted a formal letter of support to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) for contracts related to a historic hyperscale data center in Saline Township. The project, led by OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital, represents the largest economic investment in Michigan history, estimated to be more than $7 billion.

The Chamber’s support is driven by the project’s monumental economic impact. This development is a significant catalyst for economic growth, projected to create 2,500 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 permanent, high-skill jobs in Washtenaw County. It will also generate millions in new local tax revenue, directly supporting essential community services like police, fire, and schools.

The Chamber’s letter to the MPSC, regarding docket U-21990, highlights the project’s sound regulatory framework. Critically, the agreements ensure the data center absorbs all new costs required to serve its significant energy demand. This provision, supported by recent bipartisan legislation, means the development will not increase rates for DTE’s existing customers while maintaining a competitive business environment.
