The Detroit Regional Chamber recently welcomed Detroit City Council President and mayoral candidate Mary Sheffield to an exclusive event with the Chamber’s Board of Directors and other regional business leaders. The engagement provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the city’s future and reinforce the critical partnership between the Detroit Mayor’s office and the business community to continue Detroit’s economic momentum.

The Chamber Political Action Committee has endorsed Sheffield for Mayor, citing her long and dedicated service to the people of Detroit and her proven ability to foster collaboration.

Sandy K. Baruah, the Chamber’s President and Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of this collaborative spirit in his introductory remarks. He highlighted that Detroit’s incredible progress through challenges like bankruptcy and the COVID-19 pandemic was primarily possible because of the effective partnership between the mayoral administration and City Council.

“As City Council President, Mary Sheffield has been a critical partner with Mayor Duggan in driving our signature city forward,” Baruah stated.

He further underscored the importance of the city’s leadership to the entire state, noting, “Michigan cannot be successful without a successful mayor of Detroit.”

In her remarks, Sheffield expressed her gratitude for the Chamber’s support and outlined her vision for a pro-business environment that fosters growth and opportunity across the entire city. She affirmed her commitment to working closely with the business community to ensure a thriving and inclusive economy.

“Thank you to the entire Detroit Regional Chamber for your endorsement, your support, and all that you all do to really foster an environment, an ecosystem that really supports the growth of businesses not only in Detroit but across our Region,” Sheffield said.

Looking ahead, Sheffield made her objective clear: to make the city a premier destination for enterprise. She declared, “[A Sheffield administration] goal is to make Detroit the best place in the country to start and grow a business.”

The Chamber stands ready to partner with the next mayor of Detroit to build on the city’s resurgence. Continued collaboration between city leadership and the business community is essential to creating a prosperous future for Detroit and the entire Detroit Region.
