Essence Wilson, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Communities First, Inc., was honored with the 2025 Alumni Service Award by Michigan State University during the university’s annual MSU Grand Awards Ceremony held Oct. 23 in East Lansing. The Grand Awards are among the highest honors bestowed by the university, recognizing alumni whose achievements and service exemplify the Spartan spirit and create lasting impact locally, nationally, and globally.
A proud graduate of MSU’s Eli Broad College of Business, where she earned her Master of Science in Management, Strategy, and Leadership, Wilson was recognized for her outstanding contributions to community development, equitable housing, and economic empowerment.
Under her leadership, Communities First, Inc. has transformed neighborhoods through affordable housing, arts and culture initiatives, and environmental education—leveraging more than $100 million in investment and serving over 35,000 people annually. “This award isn’t just about me—it’s a reflection of the incredible work our team at Communities First, Inc. is doing to uplift communities, create opportunity, and build a more equitable future,” Wilson said.
Wilson helps lead the Flint-based nonprofit, which also operates in Detroit and serves communities across Michigan and Indiana, in advancing equitable real estate development, economic mobility, and community engagement.
Wilson’s influence extends far beyond her organization. She serves as President of the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM) and was recently selected as one of only 30 community development professionals nationwide for the inaugural Community Development Voice initiative. Her recognition from MSU reflects her enduring dedication to leadership, innovation, and service that continues to inspire both the Flint community and the Spartan network worldwide.
