The Detroit Regional Chamber’s political action committee endorsed Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s campaign for governor Thursday, providing an early seal of approval that could boost the independent’s bid for the state’s top office.

The announcement from the Detroit chamber came months before the southeast Michigan business organization traditionally reveals which gubernatorial candidate it’s supporting. In 2018 — the last time an incumbent wasn’t on the ballot in Michigan — the chamber endorsed candidates in the Republican and Democratic primaries and then made an endorsement in the general election race.

In 2018 and 2022, the Detroit Regional Chamber backed Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, who won both races. In 2014, the group supported Republican Rick Snyder’s re-election campaign. The Snyder announcement came in February, about seven months before the November election.
