Employer Spotlight: Ajax Paving and How It Supports Talent Development for Veterans

December 12, 2023

Veterans returning to civilian life are a great source of talent, and employers play a critical role in supporting these individuals’ transition and helping them thrive. In the Detroit Region, there are several veteran-friendly companies, such as Ajax Paving, providing exceptional support that can serve as a model to other employers looking to better utilize this talent pool.

Founded as a small asphalt paving company in 1951, Ajax has grown into a leader in the road construction industry. It was recently named a Gold-Level Veteran-Friendly Employer by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. Ajax received this designation as a result of offering registered apprenticeship programs that allows veteran employees to use their GI Bill benefits during the apprenticeship in conjunction with the Sixty by 30 program introduced by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which aims to increase the number of working-age adults with a skill certificate or college degree toward the goal of 60% by 2030.

According to Ajax, of all the supports employers can provide, supporting veterans in navigation and accessing education opportunities through their GI benefits is key. The GI bill provides a tuition-free path to attaining postsecondary credentials, which can be transformative for military families. However, these benefits often go unutilized because of difficulties navigating the process or balancing work and family commitments. Ajax is working to overcome this through its support programs. In addition, the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Workforce Success Toolkit has resources for employers looking to improve recruitment and retention outcomes through education benefits.

Higher education institutions also play a role in supporting veterans in furthering their training and skills development. Veterans can earn college credit for prior learning and experience that they gain through their military service. Institutions like Macomb Community College and Central Michigan University offer robust resources for veterans, including dedicated offices providing veteran support.
