Detroit Regional Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Sandy K. Baruah examines the impact of Canada’s new retaliatory tariffs on Michigan businesses and shares insights from his recent economic development trip to Japan.
“Our trade relationship with Canada is really no different than our trade relationship with a state like Ohio or a state like Indiana,” Baruah said. “This has been built over the last century; a hundred years of cooperation and seamless trade that’s now been upended…Part of the Canadian tariffs that were imposed in response to the U.S. tariffs include things like steel and aluminum. We make cars here in Michigan…and we need steel and aluminum to make those cars.”
