Michigan House Passes COVID-19 Business Liability Bills
September 25, 2020The package of bills include:
- HB 6030: Provides protection from liability to certain persons during the Covid-19 emergency.
- HB 6031: Provides protection from liability to certain persons on the reopening of a business or school during the Covid-19 emergency.
- HB 6032: Prohibits an employer from taking adverse employment action against an employee who is absent from work during a declared emergency.
- HB 6101: Provides protection from liability to certain persons on the reopening of business or school.
The Chamber and many other statewide business organizations have continued to advocate for these protections for businesses to support economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.
As stated in a letter to the Michigan Congressional Delegation earlier this summer, business owners fear that if they can survive to idle their business in order to help flatten the curve of the virus, they will not be able to survive legal action resulting from an infected employee – even if they follow all national, state, local, and industry guidelines. While businesses that act with negligence, ignorance, or malice should be offered no protections, businesses that operate in good faith need liability protection in order to welcome their employees and customers.
This package now heads to the Michigan Senate for a vote.
