The Detroit Regional Chamber applauds the Wayne County Board of Commissioners for its decisive leadership in advancing Google’s planned data center in Van Buren Township on Thursday, Oct. 1. By continuing to support the Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption and community benefits agreement, commissioners demonstrated a clear commitment to securing generational digital investments for Southeast Michigan.
The Board of Commissioners’ forward-thinking action delivers substantial economic returns while ensuring responsible development. Initial construction is projected to create roughly 4,200 annual jobs and $40 million in direct wages for skilled trades, complemented by a $10 million Energy Impact Fund for local workforce training. Over 13 years, the project will generate approximately $25 million in net new property tax revenue for Wayne County and fund $15.4 million in local infrastructure improvements.
Moreover, this milestone pairs economic growth with ratepayer safeguards, supporting clean energy additions and $1.7 billion in projected long-term utility savings. The Chamber thanks the Board of Commissioners for championing sound policy that protects taxpayers, expands the tax base, and cements the Detroit Region as a destination for modern enterprise.
