Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Holly) is pushing to ban Chinese-made connected vehicles.
The Michigan senator introduced the bill alongside Republican Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) last week, and on Thursday, she attempted to sell the bipartisan legislation at an event hosted by the Detroit Regional Chamber.
Slotkin said she was alarmed when President Trump signaled his willingness to allow Chinese cars in the United States at a Detroit Economic Club speech back in January. She said the bill is, in part, an attempt to push back on his remarks.
This comes as Trump is set to meet with Chinese leaders in Beijing next week. Slotkin said that she and Sen. Moreno wanted to ensure that the President does not give this point up in a negotiation.
