Join the Chamber and #SpreadTheWarmth, Help Homeless Detroiters This Holiday Season

December 1, 2020
2020 has been a year like no other, and many of our fellow Detroiters are facing uncertainty. The poverty and homeless rates are on the rise and expected to explode due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

People experiencing homelessness are uniquely vulnerable to contracting COVID-19. In Michigan, the virus has disproportionately impacted people of color across Detroit and the surrounding communities, where 79% of the city’s population is Black and 36% fall below the poverty line.

As your company considers giving back or launching an internal giving campaign during the 2020 holiday season, the Chamber would like to invite you to participate in the Detroit Regional Chamber’s #SpreadTheWarmth campaign to support the Empowerment Plan, a Detroit-based nonprofit.

Veronika Scott of The Empowerment Plan joined the Chamber’s Think Big: A Small Business Podcast to share how the organization aims to end the generational cycle of homelessness through employing displaced individuals across the city of Detroit and how their innovative product, a coat that transforms into a sleeping bag, continues to evolve.

The Empowerment Plan produces an innovative EMPWR Sleeping Bag Coat for the homeless. Each coat is weather-resistant and provides warmth and protection from the elements. To break the generational cycle of poverty, the Empowerment Plan also employs homeless single parents from Detroit to produce each sleeping bag coat. Learn more about the Empowerment Plan.

It costs $125 to sponsor one coat, but donations of any size can help. Please consider:

  • Making a direct contribution from your organization to help many Detroiters.
  • Encouraging your employees to join together and sponsor one or more coats for homeless Detroiters.

Please join the Chamber in supporting the Empowerment Plan, providing warmth and EMPWR coats to fellow Detroiters in need and job opportunities to previously homeless Detroiters.

There are many non profit organizations doing great work to support Detroiters that are in need of financial and other resources. The Chamber is committed to helping raise awareness of other organizations through 2021. If you would like to be considered, email Megan Spanitz at mpsanitz@detroitchamber.com.
