Super Lawyers Magazine selects Plunkett Cooney attorneys as ‘Rising Stars’

In its annual review of the state’s top young attorneys, Michigan Super Lawyers magazine has awarded 11 lawyers from Plunkett Cooney, one of Michigan’s oldest law firms, its “Rising Star” honor.

Plunkett Cooney elects board of directors members, officers

At the recent annual meeting of Plunkett Cooney – one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms – three shareholders were elected by their colleagues to serve three-year terms as members of the board of directors.
David R. Stechow was elected for the first time while Audrey J. Forbush and Scott K. Lites were re-elected.

In addition, the firm is pleased to announce that shareholders Michael S. Bogren, Michael P. Ashcraft Jr. and Forbush were re-elected by the members of the board of directors to one-year terms as chairman, secretary/treasurer and senior vice president, respectively.

Stechow, who serves as Co-leader of the firm’s Construction Law Practice Group, has successfully litigated both jury trials and arbitrations on behalf of builders, contractors, management companies, manufacturers and suppliers. A member of the firm’s Detroit office, he received his law degree in 1996 from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and his undergraduate degree in 1992 from Michigan State University. A member of the Oakland County Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan and the Steering Committee of ALFA International’s Construction Group, Stechow was selected in 2010 as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an honorary trial lawyer society comprised of less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.

The managing partner of Plunkett Cooney’s Flint office and Co-leader of the firm’s Governmental Law Practice Group, Forbush focuses her practice in the areas of municipal and medical liability. She has particular expertise representing municipalities in police liability matters. Forbush is a member of the public corporation section of the Michigan and Genesee County bar associations, and she serves as legal advisor to the Law Enforcement Action Forum, an organization consisting of select law enforcement executives throughout Michigan. Forbush received her law degree, magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School in 1988 and her undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University in 1984.

Lites, who is a member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office, is one of the firm’s most accomplished business attorneys with over 30 years of experience representing clients in their acquisition, financing, investment, development and disposition activities. He routinely negotiates and closes multi-million dollar financial transactions, real estate development projects and franchise agreements. He also has the distinction of having served as special counsel to a Michigan-based public employee pension system and as an appointed member of the state of Michigan’s Receivership Transition Advisory Board for the City of Allen Park. Lites received his law degree in 1985 from the University of Detroit School of Law and his undergraduate degree in 1982 from the University of Michigan.

Murray joins Plunkett Cooney’s Insurance Coverage Group

Attorney Tanya M. Murray recently joined the Insurance Law Practice Group of Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest full-service law firms.

A member of Plunkett Cooney’s Bloomfield Hills office, Murray represents and counsels leading property and casualty insurance companies throughout the Midwest. She provides coverage opinions and drafts corresponding coverage position letters regarding claims under commercial general liability, homeowners, umbrella and professional liability insurance policies. She also litigates coverage disputes that involve claims of bodily injury, personal and advertising injury, construction defects and environmental contamination.

Murray is an associate member of the Oakland County Bar Association’s Inns of Court, and she is a member of the State Bar of Michigan and the DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar. She is also the recipient of the 2019 Member of the Year award by the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Oakland Region.

Plunkett Cooney names five attorneys as new shareholders

Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, recently named five attorneys as its newest shareholders.

Chase M. Kubica, Mitchell McIntyre, Christopher J. Scott, Kimberly K. Seibert and Andrea Forsyth Telling were unanimously approved by the firm’s Board of Directors as the firm’s newest shareholders. The promotion from associate attorney is based on the recommendations of the firm’s Shareholder Evaluation Committee and is effective January 1, 2019.

Kubica is a member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office who focuses his litigation practice in the areas of motor vehicle liability, no fault law and premises liability. He represents national insurers, corporations and individuals in first- and third-party automobile negligence claims, as well as uninsured and underinsured motorist benefits. Kubica also has experience handling cases that involve alleged fraud and suspicious insured and medical provider claims related to motor vehicle accidents.

Admitted to the State Bar of Michigan and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Kubica has been named as a Michigan Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2013. He is a 2010 cum laude graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law and a 2006 graduate of Michigan State University.

McIntyre is a member of the firm’s Transportation Law Practice Group. He has extensive experience with insurance coverage, no-fault and high exposure transportation litigation and also specializes in transportation network claims and ride-sharing. She received her law degree from Wayne State University Law School in 2011 where she received the Bronze Key Certificate. Newly-minted Attorneys Join Plunkett Cooney

After they recently passed the Michigan Bar exam, Plunkett Cooney, one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms, has added the talents of four new attorneys.

Taher K. Ali, Matthew J. High, Celeste C. Kinney and Kelly J. Shefferly have joined the firm as associates. They will handle matters involving insurance coverage, employment law, business law and torts and litigation.

Ali is a member of the firm’s Bloomfield Hills office who practices primarily in the area of insurance law. He represents major property and casualty insurance companies in coverage cases throughout the Midwest. His coverage work includes research and coverage opinions regarding general liability policy issues.

Ali received his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota Law School. While there, he worked as a certified student attorney for the Environmental Law Clinic. He also served as a summer intern at the Wisconsin Department of Justice – Office of the Solicitor General in Madison, Wisconsin. Ali received his undergraduate degree with distinction from the University of Michigan in 2015.

A member of the firm’s Torts & Litigation and Labor & Employment Law practice groups, High handles matters involving premises liability, employment law and general negligence, including allegations of discrimination, sexual harassment, breach of contract and civil rights claims. An associate in the Bloomfield Hills office, he also assists with municipal law matters, including zoning issues, telecommunications matters, charter revisions and annexations issues on behalf of municipalities.

High recently received his law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While there, he worked as a student attorney with the State Appellate Defenders Office Criminal Advocacy Clinic. He also served as a summer intern for a Fortune 100 Company. He received his undergraduate degree from Western Michigan University in 2015.

A member of the firm’s Detroit office, Kinney will spend approximately the next two years working as a judicial law clerk at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She will return to Plunkett Cooney in September 2020.

Kinney is a member of the Detroit Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. Admitted to practice in Michigan, she graduated earlier this year, cum laude, from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. While there, she worked as a student attorney with the State Appellate Defenders Office Criminal Advocacy Clinic. Kinney received her undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2015.

The final associate to join the firm is Kelly J. Shefferly who is a member of the Banking, Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights and Transactional Law practice groups. Shefferly handles contracts and litigation, including collections and breach of contract claims. He also represents business clients in mergers and acquisitions and real estate law.

Shefferly is a former judicial extern for the Hon. Wendy Lynn Potts in the Business Court at the Sixth Circuit Court in Pontiac, Michigan. He also worked as a judicial extern for the Hon. Deborah L. Thorne of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago. A 2018 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Illinois College of Law, Shefferly received master’s degrees from The George Washington University in 2014 and DePaul University in 2010. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in 2007.
