Beyond the Bill is a rotating segment that features a Republican or Democrat Michigan Legislator for Chamber members to get to know on a more personal level and highlight their legislative priorities for Michiganders.

Michigan Rep. Doug Wozniak (R-Shelby Township) represents Michigan’s 59th House District, encompassing portions of Macomb and Shelby Townships in Macomb County. Wozniak is a small-business owner, practicing attorney at his own law firm, and a licensed insurance agent, realtor, and broker. Prior to winning a special election to the state Senate in 2021, Wozniak served two terms in the state House and was a member of the Shelby Township Board of Trustees. He also served on numerous local committees and boards, including the Planning Commission, Construction Board of Appeals, Macomb Board of Canvassers, and the Northern Macomb Republican Political Action Committee (PAC).

Wozniak currently serves as the Chair of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Vice Chair of the Families and Veterans Committee, and a member of the Judiciary and Regulatory Reform Committees.

Opportunities for Michigan

Wozniak said to sustain Michigan’s automotive sector, “initiatives and technical programs that incentivize students and professionals to enter the automotive industry, as well as scaling back regulation,” are critical. Programs that expand technical training, incentivize career transitions into the industry, and reduce unnecessary regulatory barriers can help employers innovate and grow while ensuring workers are equipped with relevant, in‑demand skills.

Wozniak highlighted apprenticeship and industry-driven training as some of the biggest opportunities to strengthen Michigan’s talent pipeline. Programs like MichBio and similar workforce initiatives provide hands‑on experience and direct connections to employers, helping participants move more quickly from education into meaningful careers while addressing talent shortages across Michigan’s economy.

Legislative Priorities

Housing policy is currently one of Wozniak’s top legislative priorities, especially as communities across the state face housing shortages and rising development costs. He supports efforts to reduce regulatory burdens on developers and believes more realistic project timelines can help accelerate housing production. He’s simultaneously voiced opposition to broad state‑level preemption, emphasizing that housing and land‑use decisions should be made at the local level.

Wozniak recognizes the state budget passed during the previous fiscal year as the legislation with the greatest economic impact. While he notes that the full effects may take time to materialize, he believes better allocation of state resources, particularly toward infrastructure, will contribute to long‑term economic stability and growth.

The 59th District

Outside of policy, Wozniak highlighted a few local favorites and hidden gems found in his district.

Wozniak first points to Da Francesco’s as “one of the best Italian places in Michigan” and can be found in Shelby Township, MI.

Additionally, Wozniak highlights River Bend Park off of 22 Mile Rd as his “hidden spot” in the 59th district. This community park has trails, fishing areas, disc golf, an accessible playground, and a nature center for the community to enjoy.
