On to November: Chamber Congratulates Mary Sheffield, Solomon Kinloch, Looks Toward General Election

The Detroit Regional Chamber extends its congratulations to Mary Sheffield and Solomon Kinloch, who were successful in the Aug. 5 primary election for Mayor of the City of Detroit. We commend them on their campaigns and wish them the best of luck as they advance to the general election this November.

The Chamber also expresses its gratitude to everyone who put their names on the ballot. Their willingness to step forward and engage in the democratic process is essential for our community’s vitality and is often a thankless service. The Chamber appreciates their dedication and the diverse perspectives they brought to the important conversations around Detroit’s future.

As the voice of the business community, the Chamber understands that strong, effective leadership in the mayor’s office is critical to continuing Detroit’s economic momentum. The Chamber looks forward to a robust and substantive general election campaign. This election provides a vital opportunity for both candidates to articulate their detailed vision for fostering a competitive business environment, attracting and retaining top talent, ensuring public safety, and strengthening Detroit’s neighborhoods.

City Council Races Advance to General Election 

In addition to the mayoral race, the Aug. 5 primary determined which candidates for the Detroit City Council will advance to the November general election.

The candidates for each district are as follows:

At-large: Eight candidates competed for two at-large seats, with the following four advancing to the general election.

  • Janeé Ayers is a former at-large Council Member who founded the Returning Citizens Task Force.
  • James Harris served as the Community Relations Chief of the Detroit Fire Department.
  • Mary Waters is an incumbent Council Member who has used her time on council to focus on housing.
  • Coleman Young II is an incumbent Council Member who previously served as a state lawmaker.

District 1 

  • James Tate is the incumbent Council Member for this district and is running unopposed.

District 2

  • Roy McCalister Jr. is a former Council Member for this district, a retired Detroit detective, and a U.S. Army veteran.
  • Angela Whitfield-Calloway is the incumbent Council Member for this district and a former human resources administrator.

District 3  

  • Cranstana Anderson is a lifelong Detroiter and community advocate.
  • Scott Benson is the incumbent Council Member for this district.

District 4 

  • Latisha Johnson is the incumbent Council Member for this district and is running unopposed.

District 5  

  • Willie Burton is a longtime member of the Board of Police Commissioners who has fought for police reform.
  • Renata Miller is a UAW retiree with experience as a business owner and program coordinator.

District 6  

  • Tyrone Carter is a current state representative.
  • Gabriela Santiago-Romero is the incumbent Council Member for this district.

District 7  

  • Denzel McCampbell is a public policy professional who serves as a congressional aide to U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
  • Karen Whitsett is a current state representative.
