As the leader in Michigan’s Sixty by 30 goal, the Detroit Regional Chamber PAC understands the importance of preparing students to graduate high school and be prepared to enter the workforce. As a key partner with the superintendent of Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD), Dr. Nikolai Vitti, the Chamber PAC endorses Sherisse Bulter, Toson Knight, and Boyd White III for the DPSCD School Board, recognizing that these candidates are committed to the ongoing success of Vitti’s vision and will ensure DPSCD produces world-class talent.
As Senior Vice President and Executive Director of CityYear Detroit, Sherisse Butler has challenged the education status quo and brings community leaders into the classroom to assist with student success. Her leadership demonstrates her unique problem-solving abilities that will bring a breath of fresh air to the DPSCD board. Previously, Butler served as Senior Director of Government Affairs for the Detroit Public Schools Community District.
“Butler’s focus on improving test scores involves ensuring emphasis is placed on student mental health and comprehension,” said Rod Liggons, the Chamber’s Director of Government Relations.
Toson Knight founded CaughtUp, a youth program that provides mentoring, tutoring, and other life skills. He is a community activist in the city of Detroit, promoting many services that keep kids safe and helping them build their skills for the future. Toson’s guidance and dedication are apparent in his uncommon capacity for creative thinking and boldness to create the best nurturing environment for young people in Detroit.
“Knight has been recognized for his work with the youth of Detroit and is a committed, dedicated advocate for young students,” said Liggons.
Boyd White III is an attorney, pastor, and proud to be a product and parent of the Detroit Public Schools community. He strongly believes in equitable education models, keeps strong teachers and administrators in DPSCD, and is committed to reversing chronic absenteeism. White believes the DPSCD must succeed, not just for his children but for all of Detroit’s children.
“Being both a product and a parent of DPSCD students, White is uniquely qualified to work to create and continue the progress found in the District,” said Liggons.
