President Donald Trump announced the expedited permit approval for Enbridge to reinforce critical infrastructure and protect the Great Lakes by renovating Line 5. Executive Order 14156 ends the five-year delay on the plan for Enbridge to build an encapsulated pipeline that will continue to carry critical energy resources.
The pipeline was first approved by then-Gov. Rick Snyder in 2018 and has faced numerous delays from misguided legal challenges. Line 5 is an important piece of energy infrastructure for the continent, providing Michiganders with critical light crude and propane extracted from Canada. Allowing this pipeline to safely continue its operations signals the continued partnership between the two countries and the economies’ reliance on each other.
As demonstrated in the Detroit Regional Chamber’s January 2025 Michigan Voter Poll, 68% of Michigan voters view Canada as an economic friend. Good faith and willingness to work with Michigan’s neighbor promotes economic growth and jobs here in Michigan, therefore, the Trump administration needs to continue to foster this relationship.
