This week, the University of Michigan Board of Regents voted to appoint Kent Syverud as the university’s 16th president

The Detroit Regional Chamber is pleased that the University of Michigan, one of the state’s four R1 universities, has a path forward with new leadership and looks forward to continued collaboration with the university.

The Chamber has a strong history of working with the state’s higher education leaders. Fellow university presidents, like Michigan State University’s Kevin M. Guskiewicz and former presidents of Wayne State University, have held seats on the Chamber’s Board of Directors, been involved in several key initiatives, like the Ann Arbor-Detroit Innovation Corridor, and benefited from the Chamber’s relationships with the state’s R1 universities.

In a statement in the fall of 2025, the Chamber’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Sandy K. Baruah, expressed the significant asset Michigan has in its four R1 universities and the importance of consistent leadership at the state’s higher education institutions.

Sandy Baruah

“Michigan’s higher education institutions are among the best in the nation. Beyond being a point of pride and prestige, they are also one of our greatest assets.

They drive innovation and economic growth and attract and cultivate the world-class talent our employers need to compete. As technology continues to rapidly change the global economy, we need to lean even more into our colleges and universities to stay competitive.

Our universities have delivered long-term transformative value to help power our economy and high-value educations that change lives. They are some of the best and most respected in the world, but they need a governance structure that lives up to their important missions.”

– Sandy K. Baruah, President and Chief Executive Officer, Detroit Regional Chamber

The Chamber welcomes President-elect Syverud to the fold of the state’s R1 leaders and wishes him the best at the helm of this world-class institution.
