This week, the University of Michigan Board of Regents voted to appoint Kent Syverud as the university’s 16th president.
The Detroit Regional Chamber is pleased that the University of Michigan, one of the state’s four R1 universities, has a path forward with new leadership and looks forward to continued collaboration with the university.
The Chamber has a strong history of working with the state’s higher education leaders. Fellow university presidents, like Michigan State University’s Kevin M. Guskiewicz and former presidents of Wayne State University, have held seats on the Chamber’s Board of Directors, been involved in several key initiatives, like the Ann Arbor-Detroit Innovation Corridor, and benefited from the Chamber’s relationships with the state’s R1 universities.
In a statement in the fall of 2025, the Chamber’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Sandy K. Baruah, expressed the significant asset Michigan has in its four R1 universities and the importance of consistent leadership at the state’s higher education institutions.
