On Jan. 16, the House Select Committee approved the bills that would fix some of the main issues employers have faced with the Earned Sick Time Act. The Detroit Regional Chamber has been at the forefront of these conversations and testified in support of this legislation on Jan. 14.
The Chamber would like to thank Rep. Bill G. Schuette (R-Midland) for his leadership on this Select Committee and his commitment to bipartisanship, as well as all members of the committee who were able to come together to find a solution that works for employees and employers. Thanks to Schuette’s support, these bills are now on the House floor and should have a vote next week.
HB 4001 addresses tipped wage for servers, maintains the tipped minimum wage at 38%, and gradually increases the standard minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2028, with inflationary adjustments starting in 2029.
HB 4002 includes changes to ESTA, such as allowing the frontloading of PTO and defining a small business as fewer than 50 employees.
The Chamber urges you to contact your state representative and advocate for their vote on this critical legislation before it is too late. It is also important for Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks and Senate Democrats to begin crafting their solution.
