The Rocket Mortgage Classic Puts the Spotlight on Detroit

Detroit became the center of the golf world for a week as the Rocket Mortgage Classic returned to the Detroit Golf Club for its third year. The tournament had everything a spectator could have wanted. Superstars of the game like Phil Mickleson, Ricky Fowler, Bryson DeChambeau, and many others played scintillating golf. There was a sudden death playoff that Australian Cam Davis ultimately won. However, the true star of the event was the city of Detroit and the region.

Rocket Mortgage did a fantastic job making sure the city was on full display throughout the Golf Channel and CBS coverage. Detroit businesses, regional charities, and regional issues were front and center during the event.

Detroit Regional Chamber Chief Operating Officer Tammy Carnrike shared how vital the Rocket Mortgage Classic was in highlighting Detroit’s transition to a Midwestern tech hub.

“The Rocket Mortgage Classic really puts a spotlight on Detroit,” said Carnrike. “The Detroit Regional Chamber is always looking for new and creative ways to market Detroit. We are thrilled that we have companies like Rocket Mortgage that are willing to work together to make Detroit a true, major tech hub.”

The tournament raised $2.7 million for charity, the bulk of it for the company’s “Changing the Course” initiative and the Connect 313 Fund, a partnership with the City of Detroit and the United Way that aims to end the digital divide in this city by 2025. With nearly 40% of households lacking internet access, Detroit ranks as the least-connected major city in the U.S.

The Detroit Regional Chamber has made educational access one of our key pillars for economic prosperity by setting the goal of 60% of Michiganders having a two-year, four-year, or professional certificate degree by 2030. The efforts from Rocket Mortgage, the United Way, and the City of Detroit to solve the digital divide will be essential in our state reaching that target, and Chamber is pleased that events like the Rocket Mortgage Classic can shine a spotlight on the community.
