Wayne State University faculty outraged at President Kimberly Espy’s decision to place the medical school’s dean on leave are demanding his reinstatement, and Espy’s decision and her lack of reasoning given were among a string of decisions that have led the Board of Governors to plan her ouster.

The Detroit Regional Chamber issued a Friday statement that decried the lack of stability in Michigan’s higher education leadership after the recent departure of University of Michigan President Santa Ono, UM President Mark Schlissel’s firing three years ago, and tumult with Michigan State University’s leadership.

“Unfortunately, there have been several surprising changes in leadership at our research universities in recent years, a trend that threatens to undercut their impact,” Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer Sandy K. Baruah said. “Michigan needs to take a fresh look at its public universities’ governing structures to provide better support for these leaders to ensure success and longevity that allows sufficient time for them to implement meaningful change, drive innovation, and improve student performance. No organization can be successful in the long term without stable leadership.”
