In August, the Detroit Regional Chamber and Education Strategy Group (ESG) brought together leaders from business, education, and nonprofit organizations for a workshop on communicating with families about postsecondary pathways and shifts in the labor market. Practitioners can use this information to better inform students and their families about the postsecondary options that lead to jobs that pay a family-sustaining wage and are in high demand by regional employers.
The workshop also featured a student panel, where current and soon-to-be college students shared their perspectives on the challenges they faced in navigating their postsecondary options and stories about the adults in their lives who helped them succeed.
Attendees left the workshop with a toolkit, including ready-to-go graphics and customizable InDesign files, and a link to a Google folder that has digital versions of the specific resources that the Chamber customized for the Detroit-area context. This work is part of an ongoing effort that the Chamber is leading to identify and promote the Region’s high-value credentials – those that lead to good, in-demand jobs which create a strong economic return for our students – and develop more skilled workers to meet Detroit Regional employers’ talent needs.
