The Detroit Regional Chamber joined a statewide coalition to oppose Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s proposed increase in tipping fees. This increase will burden residents and damage the state’s business competitivenss, particularly in Southeast Michigan.

“At a time when we’re striving to rein in costs, this trash tax hike adds unnecessary expenses to every household and business,” said Brad Williams, the Chamber’s Vice President of Government Relations. “The impact will be felt by everyone, from families to hospitals and schools.”

The proposed 1,289% increase in tipping fees translates to millions of dollars in additional yearly costs for Michigan residents and businesses. This will strain budgets and potentially lead to job losses in essential services as local governments grapple with the financial burden.

“This tax increase isn’t just about the sticker price,” Williams said. “It will likely lead to more illegal dumping as residents struggle to afford proper waste disposal.”

The Chamber remains committed to advocating for policies that promote economic growth and a healthy business environment in Michigan.
