Fears of a recession are up 11 percentage points among Michigan voters since January, around half of whom, 51%, oppose President Donald Trump’s tariff increases, a new poll shows.

Nearly half, 48%, think the tariffs will create more manufacturing jobs in the state, and 33% still support them despite recognizing they will pay higher prices.

The Detroit Regional Chamber’s latest survey, released Tuesday before the group’s Mackinac Policy Conference, demonstrates a shift along party lines in people’s views of the economy and related issues since Trump took office. It was conducted April 24-28 by The Glengariff Group Inc.

Thirty-eight percent of registered voters expect the country to be in recession in a year, up from 27% in early January. The change is attributable to Democrats and independents; 40% of independents expect a recession compared with 21% previously.
