This week, a group of students from Detroit Regional Chamber member Michigan State University (MSU)’s James Madison College visited the Detroit Regional Chamber’s headquarters, hearing from a panel of MSU alumni and Chamber executives on topics ranging from talent recruitment, careers in public service upon graduation, and MSU’s alumni network.

The Chamber’s Public Policy and Business Advocacy team shared with students the Chamber’s important work in Lansing and how alumni can use their degrees to move the state forward.

Brian J. Shoaf, the Chamber’s Vice President of Public Policy and Business Advocacy, shared the importance of internships and the need for Michiganians to engage in policymaking, while Greg Handel, the Chamber’s Chief Education and Talent Officer, discussed his work and what employers are looking for from today’s talent pipeline.

The students also heard from Glenn Stevens Jr., MichAuto Executive Director and the Chamber’s Chief Automotive and Innovation Officer, who highlighted key pillars to focus on when navigating the job market, including mission, benefits, and the importance of long-term career focus.

Lastly, Sandy K. Baruah, Chamber President and Chief Executive Officer, rounded out the panel, touching on his pathway to becoming head of the Chamber after an extensive career in Washington, D.C., working under both Bush administrations. Beginning his career as a staffer out of college, Baruah later served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce and an administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
