Businesses in one of Detroit’s bustling neighborhoods are teaming up for an event that will put the spotlight on local artists and vendors.
The Midtown Makers Market, billed as a seasonal celebration of craft, will open Nov. 25 and run every Saturday through Dec. 17. The block of West Canfield Street between Cass and Second avenues will be transformed into a holiday setting featuring live entertainment and shopping, according to a news release.
Shinola Detroit’s flagship store at 441 W. Canfield St. will be transformed into a holiday-themed marketplace where shoppers can purchase items from local businesses. The ground floor will feature vendors including floral specialist Mesh Detroit, screen printing shop SMPLFD, clothing retailer Dos Jefes Garments, beauty products retailer Ilera Apothecary, Dabls African Beads, Atelier Detroit, and Hamtramck Ceramck, according to the release.
Drinks from Two James Spirits in Corktown will be offered on the second floor.
Additional nearby businesses participating include Bon Bon Bon, City Bird, Motor City Brewing Works, Nest, Nora Detroit, Mongers Provisions, The Mushroom Hub, RUNDetroit, Source Booksellers and Third Man Records.
Complimentary gift wrapping will be available, using custom paper made on-site by a handful of Detroit-based artists.
“In partnership with our neighbors on Canfield, we wanted to kick off the holiday season with an initiative at the intersection of craft and community,” Ruthie Underwood, vice president of creative design at Shinola Detroit, said in the release. “The Midtown Makers Market was a collective idea that came to life in order to bring new experiences and opportunities to our guests this holiday.”
While each participating retailer will have plenty of ongoing activations, the Midtown Makers Market will be open for extended hours on Noel Night. Motor City Brewing Works will host its annual celebration with live music, food and drinks in their warehouse space.
The market will operate 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each week, with hours extended to 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Dec. 3 for Noel Night.
In addition, Downtown Detroit Markets, a pop-up of local businesses in Cadillac Square, has returned for its fifth year.
